Otters (Lutra lutra) were lost from Anglesey
for about 15 years from c. 1980 to the mid 1990's. Since then otters
have slowly returned. A healthy otter population is vital to the ecological
balance of river and wetland systems and may well help to prevent mink
establishing on the island. The Anglesey Otter Project has the objective
of encouraging this return by:
1) regular survey for otters
2) construction of artificial otter holts to encourage breeding
3) riparian habitat management for otters to create cover and, in the
long term, sites for natural otter holts
Project partners: CCW, EA Wales and the North West Wales Ripaprian Mammals
group. |
