Managing Community Nature Reserves
We can advise on the establishment and management of community nature reserves.
Menter Môn has long experience working with local communities to develop and establish nature reserves, which we manage on their behalf. These comprise a mixture of official Local Nature Reserves (LNRs), designated by Community Councils or County Councils, and unofficial sites either owned by Menter Môn or on Common Land in the control of the local community.

Projects commence with an evaluation of the site in terms of biodiversity, landscape, archaeology, access and the aspirations of the local community. An assessment is made of the potential to enhance its features and improve access consistent with conserving these features.

The relevant conservation and environmental agencies and voluntary bodies are fully consulted. A decision is then made as to whether it would be of benefit to declare the site officially a LNR, or whether to manage it less formally. A management plan is then devised and funding mobilised to implement projects, which normally include habitat management, creation of paths and furniture, leaflets and information boards.

A variety of habitat types are currently being managed including lowland heath, coastal heath, dunes, wet and dry woodlands, meadow flora, and riparian habitat. Sites are generally chosen for their local interest and importance, but are also of high and often approaching SSSI quality (especially the heathland sites). Most are within the Anglesey AONB.
